WATER - drink or fuel?

We all know what water is. We all use it for drinking every day. Its properties are well known all around the world since always. All of them? Of course not. Trough a simple machine, we can transform an everyday drink into the third most explosive gas in the world. How?

The machine is often called “hydrogen cell generator”, discovered by William Nicholson in 1800, who used it for lighting. It’s based on the electrolysis effect, which consists of applying electricity to water. The materials used are the following ones:

  • Stainless steel from fizzy drinks cans
  • A glass container with its cap (as Nescafe or Nutella ones)
  • Some wires and a plastic tube.
  • An electric battery (9V).
1.-To begin with, obtain two stainless steel plates from fizzy drinks cans. Make sure they fit inside the container. You must make them a hole in each of them in order to connect them to the wires.
2.-Secondly, drill the cap of the container so that the plastic tube and the wires enter inside it. You can fix it with cello tape or superglue.
3.-Then, fill the container until the top with tap water. Add a bit of one of these products to improve water conductivity: salt, sodium bicarbonate or bleach. Beware of them!
4.-Finally, submerge the steel plates inside the water and close the container with its cap. Make sure the steel plates are not in contact inside the water. To switch it on, connect both wires to the battery. The result must be something similar to this:

Through the plastic tube, Hydroxy gas will start to emerge. The yield of the machine depends on the voltage of the battery and the size of the steel plates. You can watch a professional explanation of this machine in this video. It has several uses that can be adapted depending on the needs. Its main use is as fuel. Does it pollute? It doesn’t. In its combustion, only water vapour is released to the atmosphere. Actually, some people adapt this machine to their cars, so that they replace gasoline fuel and save some money on their fuel bills. Moreover, Hydroxy gas is also used for filling floating balloons. Check its power in this amazing video!

In conclusion, we can obtain an easy, cheap and environmentally-friendly fuel from one of the most abundant substances on Earth: WATER. The end of the gasoline era is coming!

  1. It is incredible the way that they mix water with other elements to make it a new fuel, doesn´t it? Do you think this "new fuel" is going to be as powerful and as well-accepted as gasoline is nowadays?
I think we are going to be gasoline-dependents for years, no matter how many ways of different fuel appear because the society is conscious that gasoline is the most powerful fuel according to its price. What do you think about it?

    1. I think the same as you Lerma. Gasoline will be our fuel for years, I think that oil companies have a lot of power and influence to maintain the oil as the principle fuel.

    2. The combustion energy produced by gasoline is about 681KJ; and by hydrogen about 574KJ. Does it compensate to use gasoline taking into acount that it pollutes and hydrogen doesn't? Actually, I have a friend in Valencia whose father has a homemade car moved by sea water. He told me that with it, they reached Madrid with only 7 liters of sea water.

  2. My opinion about oil is that in some years it will not be the principal fuel. Nowadays electricity is gaining popularity and it could be a good option instead of fuel. That type of resource, as hydrogen, are the future and we will help the planet if we use them.

  3. Wow, it´s really amazing! I didn´t think it was totally true until I have seen the video. I knew that all substances react with other elements, and especially water reacts hardly with sodium (Na). Whenever we just add sodium into water, depending on the amount of both substances, an explosion occurs, and de piece of sodium starts to run over the surface of water. However, I didn't know that electrolysis could cause what you have explained. Sincerely, it is an article very interesting.

  4. It is really interesting, it is the post I have enjoyed more. In my opinion, nowadays hydrogen is not having as good results as different kinds of fuel, mbut in a near future, I see it as the first energy used in Spain and could be in the world.

  5. It is incredible! I will never imagine that using that simple materials you can obtain a new energy source. You had commented that it doesn't pollutes. I think that is the best thing of it. I have a question for you, is it important if the water is fresh or salt? I mean the hydrogen can be produced using both waters? It will be wonderful considering that the fresh water resources are scarce.

  6. Hydrogen can be obtained from almost every kind of liquid. It would be better if it was salt water, because salts help water to conduct even better electricity. That's why ocean water is perfect for this experiment. Thanks for watching the videos, they are really awesome and useful!
